Rightsizing Tips For Seniors

Rightsizing is an unavoidable aspect of relocating, but it may be a scary life experience for a senior. They’ve accumulated a lot of memories and “things” throughout the decades they’ve lived in their house. You may expect your parent or senior buddy to feel additional grief and suffering as a result of the relocation.

What is Rightsizing?

Rightsizing means getting rid of most of your belongings in order to fit in a smaller house with fewer storage choices, so you must determine where all of your belongings should go.

Rightsizing is a personalization of your space to your needs. It means development and freedom. Changing perceptions and arranging your environment to meet the demands of your current existence.

Start with the easy stuff.

Remove everything that is broken, damaged, or no longer useful. Then, visit out-of-the-way areas like attics, crawlspaces, and garages. Working in these “easier” areas of your house can help you gain motivation and tackle the more difficult-to-decide regions.

Don’t be a storage unit for others.

If friends or relatives have left items for you to store, it’s time to ask them to pick them up—or arrange for them to be delivered. You may need to be tough and establish a clear deadline, after which you will be donating the goods.

Get help.

Even though you can do most of the work on your own, it’s also a good idea to seek help from friends and family, or even a professional organizer to make the task more bearable.

Determine what’s important to you.

Imagine you’re relocating overseas, but you can only bring a number of items since shipping them is too expensive. To do this, start with the items you regularly use and the items you need.

Make a plan.

Plan your rightsizing, schedule a regular time each week—or several days a week—to work on rightsizing.

Value what you keep.

Instead of putting items away in a closet or piled among hundreds of other things, the fewer things you retain, the more you will appreciate and enjoy what you have. These are the special, significant items you should have in your home.
